Generator Hire

20kVA Generator Hire

The smallest set in our hire fleet, and the one that covers most small jobs: a shop through an outage, a site shed, a marquee, a house on backup. Delivered, connected and refuelled by our own crew.

What it runs

Small set, real capability

20kVA is the entry point to our hire fleet, and for a lot of jobs it is exactly the right machine. Anything bigger is capacity you pay to cart around.

A 20kVA set will carry a small shop or office through an outage: lights, refrigeration, point of sale and a couple of small motors. On site it runs a shed, a compound, hand tools and task lighting. At an event it covers a marquee, a food stall or a stage's back-of-house.

The catch is always the starting load, not the running load. Motors, compressors and refrigeration draw far more on start-up than they do once they are turning, and that peak is what sets the machine. Tell us what has to start and we will tell you honestly whether 20kVA is enough, or whether you are better off on a 40kVA or 60kVA.

  • Drop and go Compact enough for a tight yard, a car park or a nature strip, on a tilt tray or a trailer.
  • Single and three-phase So a domestic board and a site distribution board are equally straightforward.
  • Canopied, not bare Quiet enough for retail, events and residential streets where an open set is not an option.

It never goes out alone

A set on its own is rarely the whole job. The gear that gets it connected and keeps it running is held in our Kilsyth yard.

  • Refuelling trucks
  • Delivery tilt trays
  • Crane trucks
  • Industrial fuel cells
  • Temporary switchboards
  • Cable ramps and covers
  • Lighting towers
  • Load banks
What happens next

From your call to power on

No triage queue and no handballing. The person who picks up is the person organising your set.

  1. You call, we answer

A real person on the phone any hour of any day, not an after-hours message bank. Tell us the site and what has gone down.

  2. We size it on the call

Our electricians and generator specialists work out what will carry the load now, and what the connection needs to look like.

  3. Dispatch and connect

The set goes out on our own float fleet, and our A-grade electricians make the connection and commission it on site.

  4. We stay accountable

Fuel management, monitoring and on-call technicians until your operation is back on, stable, and no longer needs us.

20kVA questions

Frequently asked

What will a 20kVA generator actually run?

As a guide: a small shop, office or cafe keeping lights, refrigeration and point of sale alive; a site shed and compound with hand tools and task lighting; or a marquee and its back-of-house at an event. What settles it is the starting load rather than the running load, because motors, compressors and refrigeration draw far more on start-up. Tell us what has to start and we will confirm the size before anything is quoted.

Is 20kVA enough for a house?

Usually yes for the essentials: lights, power points, refrigeration, internet and gas hot water. Where it gets tight is ducted air conditioning, an electric hot water unit, an induction cooktop or a pool pump, each of which can take a large bite out of 20kVA on its own. List what you want running during an outage and we will size it properly.

Single-phase or three-phase?

Both. A 20kVA set covers single-phase and three-phase loads, so a domestic board and a site distribution board are equally straightforward. Our A-grade electricians make the connection on site and commission it before they leave.

How much does it cost to hire a 20kVA generator?

It depends on the term, the site and what goes out with the set, because cabling, a distribution board, fuel and delivery all move the number. We quote the whole job rather than a day rate with surprises attached, so call us with the dates and the site and you will get a real figure.

How quickly can you deliver one?

We hold hire stock in Kilsyth and run our own delivery fleet, so Melbourne metropolitan deliveries are usually same day or next day. For an outage we are on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and average a metro response under 90 minutes.

What if a 20kVA turns out to be too small?

Then we swap it. The hire fleet runs from 20kVA to 1500kVA and getting the size right is our job, so if the load has grown or the first assessment was light we will get the right machine to you rather than leave you short.
